There are lots of river otters around Anacortes where I live. This was the inspriation for this piece. I live river otters much more than sea otters. I found a nice copyright free reference as I could never get close enough for a good reference shot of my own.

I love the proportions and stance of geese. I took the reference shot of this pilgrim gander in a little zoo in Bandon, Oregon. I have become drawn (no pun intended) more and more to usig birds as my subject.

I love ravens. I even naed my dog Raven. I thought I would try my hand at drawing one. I found the feathers frustrating to draw. I thought they looked awful. But I found that when I walked away and came back a few hours later, they were pretty good. I guess I couldn't see the forest for the trees--or the feathers for the pencil strokes. I names the piece after a Bible verse in which the ravens fed the prophet Elijah when he was starvinig during a famine. They are remarkable birds.

I felt very fortunate to get this shot of a seagull in flight. He was part of a group fighting over bread pieces being scattered by a couple near the beach at Washington Park in my town. I took a lot of pictures and was delighted to see this one. I am drawing more and more birds.

I started this otter on a stump several years before I finished it. I got hung up on the stump. It was causing me all sorts of problems. I would have bagged it altogether, but my husband told me many times how much he likes it. So I persevered. And I think I became a better artist, because, in the end it was as hard as when I began.

This little otter was so cute. And I thought he would be even cuter close up, so that is what I focused on. Otters have a lot of purple in their fur. I had fun finding and playing up the colors.
